NEW STAKES AND NEW CHALLENGES
The ‘Mediterranean’ can be
conceived of as a topos that generates ‘differences’, and a ‘difference’ that
generates topoi. As such, it poses both intellectual, political and cultural
challenges and rewards. It poses challenges both to ‘Europe’s’
self-definition and to those countries considered ‘Mediterranean’. These
challenges are of a serious nature, not merely of identity or taxonomy,
important those these are in influencing public perceptions that are attended
to by politicians and policy makers. They include demographic and migratory
factors, geopolitical issues, political and economic questions, and challenges
to identity and cultural issues. But the relationship between ‘Europe’ and the
‘Mediterranean’ if analysed carefully also offers new rewards. This Conference,
« Betwixt and Between » Europe and the Mediterranean : New Stakes and New
Challenges, is intended to explore the mutual and reciprocal challenges that
Europe and the Mediterranean pose for each other, as well as the challenges
posed to our intellectual understanding of the categories themselves,
« Europe » and the « Mediterranean ». But before this can be teased out, we
need to examine the structural and processual factors that link and
reciprocally transform the two topoi. These are demographic and migratory,
geopolitical, political and economic, and finally those of idenity and
culture.
